Nearly the middle of February?!? How did that happen?! Firstly may we take this opportunity to wish all of our customers and followers a rather belated Happy New Year!
We're glad to report that 2017 was a successful year for us, seeing us expand the Work Boat Hire fleet quite significantly with the addition of over 6 custom built vessels in 2017 alone, taking the fleet to over 30 vessels as we begin the new year. Whilst our Plant and Equipment fleet also rapidly increased, as we invested in Plant Trailers, Hydraulic Hand-held Post Drivers and a range of Excavators over the course of the year, as well as extensive staff training to boot!
Perhaps one of the most exciting recent acquisitions for us however has been that of acquiring the former stone-loading wharf at Bridge 36 on the Coventry Canal, which is already proving a helpful addition to our business operations.
The site is fully road accessible and is capable of accommodating vehicles up to large articulated vehicles, and so is ideally situated for assisting our Hirer's and Contractors in the loading and unloading of any plant or materials as required, as they service the Coventry and Ashby Canals.
Here's our Powered 36FT Workboat 'Cotswold' - on a rather crisp wintry morning last week - having a wood chipper unloaded ahead of her next hire commencing this week.
For further information on Mancetter Wharf, or any of the Plant and services we offer, please do get in touch!
Congratulations to colleagues Sarah and Curtis, who both achieved their Royal Yachting Association Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificates last week, with the lovely Richard from Birmingham and Midland Marine Services - safety comes first here at A and R Rothen Ltd, as all of our staff members now hold this nationally recognised qualification.
Get those 'L' plates off guys!
August saw the launch of our second, custom-made Excavator Carrying work boat 'Newark' - and since joining the fleet, she has enjoyed a successful, non-stop late Summer and Autumn assisting The Canal and River Trust with Piling works across the country!
Based on her sister vessel 'Element', 'Newark' is 40FT long x 6FT 10" wide and has a draught of 2" unladen. Fitted with four hydraulic 'Spud' legs - which can operate to maximum depth of 2Ms- 'Newark' also has a raised working area running the length of the vessel's hold, which combined with the legs, provides a stable working platform from which the Excavator can travel and operate from almost any position on the vessel for added versatility.
A number of attachments are also available to fit our Excavators for use on this vessel, meaning 'Newark' is particularly suited to Piling, Dredging and Nico-spanning works. As a self propelled vessel, 'Newark' is easily moveable between sites, whilst our Excavator's fold-down canopies allow for easy passage through bridge holes.
'Newark' is also fully fitted with Welfare facilities.

A & R Rothen Ltd are pleased to announce that we have been awarded accreditation from Alcumus Safe Contractor for achieving excellence in Health and Safety in the workplace.
Alcumus Safe Contractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises extremely rigorous standards in Health and Safety management amongst contractors. It is used by thousands of organisations in the UK including SMEs and FTSE 100 COMPANIES.
Our application for Safe Contractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business. Gemma Archibald, Director of Alcumus Safe Contractor said: "More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that A & R Rothen Ltd has done. The firm's high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector".
Alcumus Safe Contractor is assesses the Health and Safety arrangements, policies and qualifications of contractors. Many major clients recognise the scheme and accept the Safe Contractor certificate as confirmation of competency in Health and Safety practice. Under the scheme, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines Health and Safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on the database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website. Client organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. Those clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Our Powered Carrying Work Boat 'Pioneer' has had a busy start to the Summer so far, as she assists The Canal and River Trust as they clear litter and other debris from the waterways - and just look at that haul of shopping trolleys!
Hats off to CRT and their teams of fantastically dedicated volunteers who work so hard to maintain our historic canals and rivers across the UK, keeping them clean and navigable.
